What is leetspeak?
Leetspeak — from the word "elite", written 1337 or l33t — is an internet writing style that replaces letters with similar-looking numbers and symbols. It grew out of 1980s bulletin-board systems and early hacker culture, where it was partly playful and partly used to slip past keyword filters. Today it lives on in gaming, memes, and usernames.
Basic vs hardcore leet
Basic leet swaps only the most recognizable letters (a→4, e→3, i→1, o→0, s→5, t→7), so the text stays readable. Hardcore leet replaces almost every letter, often with multi-character symbols like m→/\/\ and w→\/\/, for the maximal old-school look.
